The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, New Hampshire, has one of northern New England's only pediatric oncology centers. We are proud to be affiliated with the nationally recognized cancer center, Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC). Any childhood disease is a horrible trial, but childhood cancer is especially difficult due to the type of treatments involved and the emotionally devastating mortality rate. The staff at CHaD are some of the most highly trained and dedicated in the country, and at any time may be treating 100 young children from New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.
Bringing joy to those children fighting cancer is a worthwhile effort that helps the treatment of the child and brings some respite to the whole family. Contributions from Kristen's Gift fundraising events fund supplies, toys, videos and other materials for the pediatric chemotherapy infusion site (The CHaD Pad). The play area needs to be filled with activities and entertainment to help the kids through infusion or transfusion sessions, many of which take hours. Kristen's Lounge, completely funded by Kristen's Gift, is a dedicated chemotherapy area just for teens, providing a space where teens can be treated separate from smaller children. Kristen's Gift also helps families cope with the financial difficulties of long-term treatment. As our funding grows, proceeds will also help fund pediatric cancer research at CHaD and NCCC.
Kristen's Gift, a fund dedicated to helping support the kids and families dealing with pediatric cancers at CHaD, has been created by her family in loving memory of Kristen Xiggoros, a fifteen-year-old Manchester girl who was treated at CHaD for a rare hepatosplenic lymphoma.
